The Art and Science of Dental Photography



Dr Simon Chard will highlight what is required to create beautiful, well framed and predictable dental images. He will explain the key equipment, setting and techniques  required and discuss common pitfalls that dentists make when trying to take dental photographs. He will also highlight the growing field of dental videography and give delegates tips on creating fantastic dental videos. There will be a live demo and delegates are recommended to bring their cameras if they have them.

Aims and objectives:
  • Understand the reasons for taking photographs in dentistry
  • Gain an understanding of the equipment required including accessories for consistently beautiful photos
  • Understand camera settings for dental photography
  • Gain an insight into techniques and patient/dentist positioning
  • Gain an insight into which images to take (based on BACD accreditation criteria)
  • Some tips on how to get artistic images
  • Understand the importance of safe storage and rules of editing images
  • Understand the importance of video and how to create great video content
  • Gain an insight into the Importance of patient consent
This lecture will have elements of enhanced GDC learning outcome C: maintenance and development of knowledge and skill within your field of practice

Andrew Chandrapal

Andrew has gained knowledge in all aspects of restorative disciplines and continues to update his knowledge with international studies on a regular basis. His interests and skills have led to attaining a Distinction in a double Masters of Clinical Dentistry (MClinDent) in fixed and removable prosthodontics as well as 2 further academic diplomas. He is also a Graduate of the Kois Centre, based in Seattle – of which only a handful have attained this 9-step level of training within the UK. 

Andrew is Immediate Past President of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and a long-standing member of the AACD, the International Team for Implantology, the Association of Dental Implantology and the British Society of Occlusal Studies.

He is also an educator to other dentists on a nationally and international level. Andrew is a key opinion leader to the industry and advisor to dental publication within the disciplines of aesthetic dentistry, treatment planning and composite resin artistry.

Simon Chard

Simon Chard qualified with Honours from King's College London Dental Institute; he was awarded the prestigious Academy of Operative Dentistry Award given to the top student in the year for clinical dentistry, as well as receiving awards for root canal therapy and aesthetic dentistry.

Simon is passionate about his profession and since qualifying has undertaken extensive postgraduate education especially in the field of minimally invasive cosmetic dentistry. 

Simon is Chair of the Membership committee for the British Academy of Cosmetic dentistry (BACD). Simon also finds time to lecture to other dentists nationally on the use of the advanced technique of CEREC CAD-CAM dentistry - a state of the art technology designed to provide porcelain veneers, crowns and bridges in 1 visit.

Simon is in practice in mixed and private dental clinics in Southwest London and Surrey. Outside of work Simon enjoys keeping fit as well as being a keen photographer. This love of photography has transcended into his day to day dentistry and he is particular passionate about this element of his clinical work.
